evelyn svokas

Evelyn Svokas, 95, of Weirton, WV, passed away peacefully at her home on February 5, 2025.

Born on March 19, 1929, Evelyn was a lifelong resident of Weirton, with the exception of a brief period of her life when she moved to Butler, PA.

A graduate of Weir High School, she was a talented saxophonist in the Weir High Marching Band. Shortly after graduation, she met George G. Svokas, and they were married on August 18, 1946. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising five children and cherishing the joy of their growing family, which came to include six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She and George shared a passion for camping, and, in 1971, they founded Family Fun Recreation, a local business that has been a Weirton staple for over five decades. Evelyn worked as the manager until a stroke forced her to step away. In addition to her work at Family Fun Recreation, she also served as an income tax preparer for H&R Block.

In her free time, Evelyn found joy in swimming, tending to her vegetable garden, and listening to the timeless sounds of Big Band music. She was known for her warmth and generosity, always welcoming family and friends into her home with open arms.

In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her daughter, Marianne Svokas, her husband, George, who passed on May 18, 2005; her son, Nicholas Svokas, who passed on November 2, 2007; her brother, Nicholas Exarhos and her sister, Marie Glasure.

She will be remembered with love by her sons, Gus “Chuck” Svokas (Barbara), and Thomas Svokas (Ruthie Jones); her daughter, Vivian Dunn; her grandchildren, Amy Svokas (Mike Ziklo), Steve Svokas (Jaime), Andrew Svokas Natalie Tye (Briannica), Stephanie Svokas (Steve Schultz) and Nick Svokas; her great grandchildren, Gage and Gianna Svokas, Zoe’ Nicole and Noah and Liv Tye.

Visitation will be Saturday from 11 AM until 1 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street Weirton.

A Funeral Liturgy will follow at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Weirton at 1:30 PM on Saturday.
