Cheryl Lee Costello, of Weirton, a beloved wife, mother, and Mimi, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on Sunday, February 9, 2025. She was 70 years old.
Born on October 28, 1954, Cheryl was the cherished daughter of the late Henry “Hank” and Marie (Kosar) Vierbicky. A proud graduate of the Weir High Class of 1972, she was known for her kind heart, radiant smile, and unyielding faith.
On May 29, 1976, Cheryl married the love of her life, Bruce Costello. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and memories that will forever be cherished. Cheryl never met a stranger, and her warm personality had a way of making everyone feel welcome.
A devout Catholic, Cheryl lived her life as a woman of profound faith, always putting others before herself. She was deeply involved in her community, working for the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce and serving as the former Executive Director of the Weirton United Way. Cheryl organized impactful efforts such as the renowned annual golf outing, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the community she adored.
She was tirelessly committed to making every day better for someone –whether sharing her love for travel with others as a travel agent at Weirton AAA or helping families capture milestone moments and bringing smiles to people’s faces through her position at the Image Zone. Despite battling rheumatoid arthritis for over 50 years, Cheryl’s resilience and positive spirit were ever-present and a gift to all who knew her.
Her creative talents were boundless. Cheryl enjoyed baking cakes and cookies, crafting beautiful arrangements, and spending hours making thoughtful gifts for others. She gave generously of her time and talents, often making food and items for those battling cancer or in need of comfort.
Cheryl’s devotion to her community was unwavering. She served as Past President of the WVU Hancock County Parent’s Club as well as the Weir High Girls Basketball Boosters. She was a dedicated organizer of the 1972 Weir High Reunion Committee.
An avid Steelers and WVU Mountaineer fan, Cheryl loved cheering on her favorite teams. She found peace and joy while traveling through the California Wine Country and spending time at the beach, especially Siesta Key, where she adored palm trees and breathtaking sunsets. She and Bruce cherished their weekend getaways to the Lodge at Geneva and the wine trails of Geneva and Madison, Ohio.
Cheryl’s greatest joy was her family. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and friends, creating memories filled with love and laughter.
In addition to her parents, Cheryl was preceded in death by her beloved Uncle Van L. Vierbicky.
Left to cherish her memory with complete love and admiration are her husband Bruce G. Costello of Weirton, daughter Dr. Lisa M. Costello (Dave Smith) of Morgantown, son Jason (Ashley) Costello of Canonsburg, PA., grandchildren Eleanor “Ellie” Grace Smith, Cashton and Cruz Costello, brother Keith (Connie) Vierbicky, sister-in-law Kathleen (Larry) Braun, and many cousins and friends.
The family would like to thank her many physicians and healthcare providers over the years. They send special gratitude to Melissa “Missy” Joy for Cheryl’s exceptional care.
